MOSCOW (Voice of Russia) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has said energy is a basic resource of the economy, declaring that Russia is moving fast toward self-sufficiency in battery and energy-storage technologies.
Speaking at a meeting on energy storage, Putin said that while expanding battery production, Russia must keep its eyes on the future — including so-called post-lithium technologies that promise more powerful and environmentally friendly storage systems.
He stressed that Russia needs its own modern energy-storage sources and called for battery systems to be introduced more widely into the power grid, particularly in regions facing energy deficits. Storage systems, he added, can also support the rapidly growing capacity of data centers.
The president called for a clear regulatory framework setting unified standards for the quality, safety and life cycle of energy storage systems, including their reuse.
Putin said that once new plants reach their planned capacity, Russia will meet most of its domestic battery demand on its own. He emphasized building a full end-to-end production chain based largely on Russian raw materials, developing the mineral deposits used in storage manufacturing, and adopting the latest technologies, materials, electronics and software.
He also called for deeper cooperation with foreign partners on the basis of mutual benefit, drawing on the world’s best practices to localize production.
During the meeting, Putin launched a new battery production unit in Moscow via video link.
