NEW YORK (Voice of Russia): Venezuela’s deposed president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores pleaded not guilty as they rejected the new charges against them during an appearance in a federal court in New York.
During the hearing in the Southern District of New York federal court, Nicolas Maduro was asked about his position on the charges, and he said the charges against him were false.
US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein asked Maduro again whether he admitted guilt, to which Maduro replied that he completely rejected the indictment. The court then ordered that a not-guilty plea be entered in the record on his behalf.
Maduro’s wife Cilia Flores also rejected the charges, saying she was completely innocent and had committed no crime.
During the hearing, the prosecution proposed delaying the start of the formal proceedings in the case by two weeks.
Maduro’s lawyer Barry Pollack said the new charges would make it difficult to follow the proposed court schedule, but expressed hope that the defense team would try to complete its preparations on time.
