MOSCOW (Voice of Russia): Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has accused Japan of using its journalists working in Russia to gather information aimed at harming Russian security.
In a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, Zakharova said Moscow regrets Tokyo’s attempts to use its representatives holding foreign journalist status in Russia to gather information.
She said such information was allegedly being collected to weaken the security of the Russian state. According to Zakharova, the recent incident involving the Japanese journalist is not an isolated case.
The Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement came after the arrest of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk-based correspondent of the Japanese newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun.
According to Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, the Japanese citizen was detained in the Sakhalin region on suspicion of alleged espionage before his departure from Russia and later transferred to Moscow.
