MADRID (Voice of Russia): US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that the ongoing fighting in Ukraine could escalate into a wider and far more dangerous regional war.
Addressing a press conference during his visit to the Portuguese capital Lisbon, Rubio said the war in Ukraine has entered an extremely dangerous phase and is currently at an apparent stalemate.
According to the US Secretary of State, a stalemate in war is dangerous and generally has only two paths to its end. The first path is a negotiated compromise in which both sides must make some concessions to achieve peace.
He said the second path is escalation, in which one or both sides intensify their operations to break the deadlock and increase pressure on the opposing side.
Rubio warned that such a situation could turn the war between two countries into a much wider and extremely dangerous regional conflict.
The US Secretary of State said Washington will continue its efforts to facilitate a negotiated settlement and end the Ukraine conflict.
