Moscow: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov clarified that there are no plans to transform BRICS into a military alliance, nor has it ever been intended to function as a collective defense organization.
He emphasized that BRICS is neither a military union nor a collective security organization with mutual defense obligations. According to him, it was never designed for such a purpose, and there is no intention to turn it into a military bloc in the future.
Regarding recent naval exercises in South Africa, Ryabkov said that BRICS member countries participated as sovereign nations, and the exercises were not conducted under the BRICS platform.
On whether BRICS could protect its members’ commercial ships from attacks, he stated that the group has no collective mechanism for this purpose, except for improving logistics and ensuring greater protection against sanctions.
He added that such security responsibilities are not part of BRICS’ agenda and should be ensured through other means.
