WASHINGTON (Voice of Russia): US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a record low, while public support for the Democrats is growing fast two weeks ahead of the midterm elections, according to an opinion poll conducted by The Washington Post, the ABC television channel and the French pollster Ipsos.
According to the poll results, Trump’s approval stands at 33 percent, down 4 percentage points on July and 8 percentage points on October 2025.
In the race for control of the House of Representatives, the Democrats are 8 percentage points ahead of the Republicans, compared with 3 percentage points in July. Respondents said their dissatisfaction with the Republicans stems primarily from Trump’s actions, as well as from rising inflation in the country caused by the war with Iran. Specifically, 72 percent of those surveyed believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, which is 5 percentage points higher than in April.
The poll also revealed that, for the first time in more than a decade, Democrats are perceived as more reliable when it comes to addressing economic issues. The approval rating for Trump’s economic policies fell to 28 percent, down from 33 percent in July. Economic problems faced by many Americans are so severe that 48 percent of survey respondents reported that their financial situation had worsened since Trump returned to the White House in 2025. This is the highest figure among all presidents recorded in WP and ABC polls since 1986. In addition, 65 percent of respondents believe that the war with Iran was a mistake.
According to the newspaper, the survey has revealed that Republicans “are on the defensive in these final weeks, even in areas where they have traditionally held a strong advantage.” However, “Republicans still enjoy an overall lead in money to pour into political advertising that they hope will hold back the Democratic tide,” it noted, adding that voter turnout at midterms is typically lower than at presidential elections and it will be more difficult for Republicans to mobilize their supporters. This said, the newspaper anticipates that Democrats will be able to regain control of the House.
The poll was conducted from October 9 through 13 among 2,545 adult respondents.
The US midterm congressional elections will take place on November 3. In these elections, 33 of the 100 members of the Senate and all 435 members of the House of Representatives will be up for re-election. Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress.
