STOCKHOLM (Voice of Russia): Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said that he and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Ukraine’s request, because Kyiv wanted to open a channel of communication with Russia.<\/p>\n
Finnish President Alexander Stubb told the local broadcaster Yle that the purpose of the telephone conversation with the Russian president was to establish a channel of communication with Moscow at Ukraine’s request.<\/p>\n
He said that other European countries were also aware of the contents of this conversation.<\/p>\n
According to Alexander Stubb, this was the first time the European Union received a direct message from Russia about the Ukraine war or the situation in the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n
The Finnish president rejected a report by the British newspaper Financial Times which claimed that the history of Slavic peoples was also discussed during the telephone conversation with President Putin.<\/p>\n
Alexander Stubb described this claim as disinformation, saying that such reports are not correct.<\/p>\n
He made it clear that Finland is not playing the role of mediator between Russia and Ukraine and that his country will continue to support Ukraine.<\/p>\n
It may be recalled that Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store spoke by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 27 at the request of Finland and Norway.<\/p>\n
