MOSCOW (Voice of Russia): The United States has approved the sale of 500 advanced PAC-3 missiles for the Patriot air defence system and related military equipment to Ukraine. The total value of this defence deal is reported to be 2.1 billion dollars, while according to US officials, America’s own funds will not be used to purchase the missiles.<\/p>\n
The US State Department and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which works under the Pentagon, announced this decision on 31 October.<\/p>\n
According to US officials, under the proposed deal, 500 PAC-3 missiles will be supplied to Ukraine for the Patriot air defence system. In addition, classified and unclassified additional parts of PAC-3 MSE missiles, logistic facilities and related technical support will also be part of the deal.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by the US State Department, all costs of this deal will be borne by allied and partner countries. Ukraine will also be assisted in purchasing the missiles through financial resources provided by Canada, Germany and Norway, along with a European Union loan.<\/p>\n
US officials made it clear that US government funds are not included in this deal.<\/p>\n
According to Washington, the purpose of the proposed defence deal is to strengthen Ukraine’s air and missile defence capability so that it can counter current and future air threats more effectively.<\/p>\n
The US State Department said in its statement that this sale is in line with US foreign policy and national security objectives and will improve the security of a partner country considered important for political and economic stability in Europe.<\/p>\n
Under the deal, the missiles will be supplied by the US defence company Lockheed Martin, which is among the Pentagon’s major defence contractors.<\/p>\n
According to US officials, implementing this deal will not require deploying additional US government or defence company representatives in Ukraine. Washington also says this sale will have no negative effect on US defence preparedness.<\/p>\n
The US administration has formally notified Congress about the proposed deal. US lawmakers will have 30 days to review the deal and possibly block it.<\/p>\n
After the completion of the congressional review period and other necessary steps, implementation of the deal can move forward. US officials have not announced a final date for the delivery of the missiles to Ukraine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
