MOSCOW (Voice of Russia): Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said Russia hopes a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will take place soon. He also described the resumption of talks on nuclear arms reduction and strategic stability as necessary.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Dmitry Peskov said Moscow expects the US negotiators to brief President Putin on their consultations with Ukrainian and European officials and to continue contacts between Washington and Moscow on a number of important issues.<\/p>\n
Peskov said Russia always considers President Putin’s meetings with the US negotiators extremely important, timely and purposeful, and values their mediation efforts. He said journalists would be informed once the date and place of the meeting are decided.<\/p>\n
On resolving the Ukraine conflict, the Kremlin spokesman said it is essential for Russia that the Ukrainian side in peace talks be represented by a person who has legal standing and is ready to take the decisions needed to end the war and accept responsibility for them.<\/p>\n
On nuclear arms reduction and strategic stability, Dmitry Peskov said Russia has repeatedly stressed at various levels the need to resume talks on these subjects immediately.<\/p>\n
He said that after a long time, the world is facing a situation for the first time in which there is no effective legal framework in the field of strategic stability and nuclear arms reduction, which is an extremely dangerous situation.<\/p>\n
According to Peskov, talks on strategic stability and nuclear arms reduction will be complex and lengthy, so it is essential to start them early.<\/p>\n
The Russian presidential spokesman said Moscow believes it is Russia that should hold talks with the United States on these issues. However, in talks between Russia and the US, the nuclear capabilities of European countries, especially Britain and France, cannot be ignored.<\/p>\n
On the humanitarian crisis in the town of Alyoshki in the Kherson region, Dmitry Peskov said efforts are under way to resolve the situation. He said the issue was also discussed in a conversation with the Pope, and it also came up during the recent telephone contact between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Peskov said it was agreed with President Trump that Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova would stay in contact with her US counterpart on this matter.<\/p>\n
Asked about measures regarding oil tankers facing US sanctions, the Kremlin spokesman said clarification on this matter should be sought from the US Department of Energy.<\/p>\n
He said Russia has been a reliable supplier for global energy markets in the past, is one today, and will remain one in the future.<\/p>\n
On the situation in the Arctic region, Dmitry Peskov said Russia believes the Arctic should be a region of cooperation based on mutual interest between countries rather than confrontation.<\/p>\n
He said talks are necessary for this purpose and Russia is ready for dialogue, but European countries are avoiding contacts in this regard.<\/p>\n
