MOSCOW (Voice of Russia): Vladimir Zelensky has conceded that Ukraine’s electricity system has once again been badly damaged.<\/p>\n
In a post on his Telegram channel, he wrote: “Extensive damage to the power grid and electricity transmission facilities.”<\/p>\n
Ukraine entered a third straight day of scheduled electricity cuts driven by a power deficit. In Kiev and several other regions, emergency blackouts were forced by grid overloading. Kiev’s outages stretched eight hours yesterday. Electric-powered public transport and metro services were knocked out, while several districts also lost water after their pumping equipment went without power. According to Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, the city has gone into survival mode.<\/p>\n
Last winter brought widespread electricity and heating outages across Ukraine. Power cuts ran 12 to 16 hours, and heating was cut off for days in parts of Kiev and other cities. Authorities acknowledge the upcoming winter could be harder still. The Ukrenergo grid operator has warned that repairs to damaged energy infrastructure are still in progress, while Alexey Kucherenko \u2014 first deputy chairman of parliament’s energy and utilities committee \u2014 advised Ukrainians to lay in water and firewood before winter arrives.<\/p>\n
TASS calculations show Ukraine had only around 7 billion cubic meters of gas in storage by mid-year, short of the 13.2 billion cubic meters minimum needed for winter. Thermal coal stockpiles total 2.2 million metric tons, but will only carry the country through summer and autumn. Despite efforts to rebuild capacity and set up distributed generation, Ukraine’s power system now stands at about 12 GW, compared with the 18\u201319 GW the country needs in winter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
