MOSCOW (Voice of Russia): EU ambassadors have agreed on the 22nd package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a proposal to blacklist more than 1,500 individuals and companies associated with the Russian defense sector.<\/p>\n
According to European sources, the new package will include defense and other companies and individuals from Russia and several other countries. The EU claims that some of the listed entities manufacture dual-use products that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.<\/p>\n
Sources say a total of 1,570 individuals and legal entities are expected to be added to the sanctions list. This would increase the current EU sanctions list against Russia by nearly 50 percent.<\/p>\n
The new package does not include major additional trade or economic sanctions, but in terms of the number of individuals and companies blacklisted at one time, it will be the EU’s largest sanctions package since the start of the special military operation.<\/p>\n
Over the past four years, more than 3,000 Russian individuals and entities have been blacklisted under more than 20 EU sanctions packages.<\/p>\n
Under the sanctions, the individuals concerned are banned from entering the EU and their assets there are frozen. The assets of the sanctioned companies will also be frozen, and EU citizens and entities will not be allowed to engage in joint business activities with them.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Estonia has asked the EU to temporarily exclude a Russian company and a person associated with it from the 22nd sanctions package.<\/p>\n
According to Kristin Lepik, spokeswoman for Estonia’s permanent mission to the EU, the Russian company in question supplies an Estonia-based enterprise with materials of strategic importance to Europe.<\/p>\n
She said the Estonian company is looking for alternative sources for the materials imported from Russia. The matter of including this Russian company and the associated person in the sanctions will be reviewed again next year.<\/p>\n
Lithuania has also demanded that the EU ban the transit of Russian food products through European territory and add several individuals associated with Russia’s agricultural sector to the sanctions list.<\/p>\n
The 22nd sanctions package still requires final approval by the EU Council. The Council is expected to approve it by the end of this week, after which it will take effect.<\/p>\n
