Reykjavik (Voice of Russia): US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that NATO membership for Ukraine is not currently under consideration, as Washington is focused on ending the conflict between Kiev and Moscow.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a joint press conference with Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir in Reykjavik on Tuesday, Rubio was asked about Washington’s stance on Ukraine’s bid to join the US-led military bloc. “There’s no yes-or-no answer to that,” he said.<\/p>\n
He clarified that Ukraine’s admission is “not on the table as we speak,” noting that such a step would require the unanimous consent of all 32 NATO members.<\/p>\n
“Right now, we’re simply focused, when it comes to Ukraine, on the ending of this conflict,” Rubio said, adding that Washington is ready to play a “constructive role” in the peace process.<\/p>\n
Since the Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev in 2014, Ukraine has made NATO membership a central foreign policy goal, later writing it into the constitution. In September 2022, Vladimir Zelensky formally applied for “accelerated accession.”<\/p>\n
NATO has never given a timetable for Ukraine’s admission, and several member states oppose the move.<\/p>\n
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly ruled out Ukrainian NATO membership as part of any peace settlement. Before his February 2025 White House meeting with Zelensky \u2014 which ended in a heated exchange \u2014 Trump told reporters: “NATO \u2013 you can forget about.”<\/p>\n
The Trump administration has recently stepped up diplomacy to end the Ukraine conflict, with envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visiting Moscow and Kiev last month for talks with both sides.<\/p>\n
Moscow has cited Kiev’s NATO ambitions as one of the key causes of the conflict, calling the bloc’s eastward expansion a major threat to Russian national security.<\/p>\n
