Moscow (Voice Of Russia) At least 22 people, including five children, were injured after two trams collided in western Moscow, local authorities reported on Thursday.
The accident occurred on a service road of Volokolamskoye Highway, near Vodnikov Street, when one of the trams reportedly derailed due to a technical malfunction and crashed into another tram.
According to law enforcement officials, around 70 passengers were on board the two trams at the time of the collision. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, with about 20 ambulances deployed to assist the injured and transport them to hospitals.
Authorities said that 11 of the injured are in serious condition.
Preliminary information from the Moscow Interior Ministry suggests that a technical failure in one of the trams may have caused it to leave the tracks, leading to the crash.
The Moscow Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances and cause of the accident. A special commission involving experts from the Moscow Metro and the tram manufacturer has also been set up to examine the incident.
Following the crash, city authorities introduced replacement bus services to transport passengers between the Bratsevo stop and the Sokol metro station. Traffic arrangements on Volokolamskoye Highway have also been temporarily changed, with the exit from Svobody Street toward the highway in the direction of the city center closed.
