MOSCOW (Voice of Russia): Russia has expressed hope that the election of a new Secretary-General of the United Nations will pave the way for ending the dominance of Western countries, behind-the-scenes decisions and political pressure in the world body’s Secretariat. The Russian Foreign Ministry, criticizing the UN’s current administrative system, has demanded fundamental reforms in the organization and strengthening the role of developing countries.
On October 24, on the occasion of United Nations Day, Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in a statement on his Telegram channel that the United Nations is currently facing serious administrative and institutional problems that cannot be ignored.
The Russian diplomat said it is necessary to restore the tradition of collective decision-making in the work of the United Nations, ensure full implementation of all principles of its Charter, and adapt the world body’s procedures to the requirements of the current multipolar world order.
He stressed that honest negotiations based on mutual respect should be promoted instead of behind-the-scenes political dealings and secret understandings.
According to Kirill Logvinov, it is necessary to make the voice of the Global South, that is, developing countries, more effective in the United Nations and to free the Secretariat from the political domination of Western countries.
He said that Russia has special hopes in this regard from the election of the new Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The senior Russian Foreign Ministry official, describing the current situation of the United Nations as a deep systemic crisis, said that political interference in the activities of the organization’s Secretariat and unnecessary bureaucracy in the decision-making process are increasing.
He alleged that trends are increasing toward ineffective use of the United Nations budget, interference in the internal affairs of member states and promotion of a specific political and ideological agenda.
According to the Russian diplomat, some countries want to use the United Nations as a means to advance their limited national and political interests instead of using it to solve common global problems.
He said that as a result of these trends, the credibility and effectiveness of the world body is suffering significant damage.
Kirill Logvinov made it clear that Russia will continue its efforts for the full restoration of the dignity, global standing and effective role of the United Nations so that the organization can use its capabilities fully in promoting international peace, security and cooperation.
It should be noted that the term of office of the current UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, ends on December 31, 2026. He has held this position since 2017.
According to the procedure for electing a new Secretary-General, the UN Security Council will recommend a candidate, after which the General Assembly will formally elect the new Secretary-General.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov has previously made it clear that Moscow is not announcing support or preference for any particular candidate.
According to him, Russia’s basic condition is that the new Secretary-General should be professionally competent and politically neutral.
